SAYULITA ANIMALS IS NOT A SHELTER!

Our primary mission and programs for the health and well being of our local pets is our Sterilization (Spay and Neuter) Program. We do not take in strays, street animals or run an animal shelter.

However, if you are interested in adopting, we do stay in touch with our community and local animal foster parents, who are looking to find forever homes for animals in their care. To find out more information about adopting, please send an email to contact@sayulitanimals.org with the following description of what you are looking for:

IMPORTING DOGS FROM MEXICO TO THE USA AND CANADA?

Sayulitanimals helps connect pets with owners, however, we NOT responsible for any failed attempts at importing animals to your home country. Please educate yourself about the current policies and regulations that apply to your import destination.

USA To bring a dog from Mexico to the USA in 2025, you'll need to follow these steps:

1.Complete the CDC Dog Import Form:This form is required for all dogs entering the US and can be found on the CDC's website. Submit the form online at least 30 business days before your travel date, as it's the first step in obtaining an import permit. Click here for form.

2. Ensure your dog meets the requirements: The dog must be at least 6 months old, have a valid rabies vaccination certificate, and appear healthy upon arrival. Additionally, the dog must be microchipped.

3. Obtain necessary documents: You'll need the completed CDC Dog Import Form receipt and your dog's rabies vaccination certificate. Some airlines or states may also require a health certificate.

4. Consider a customs broker:If you're bringing a dog in for commercial purposes, you may need the assistance of a customs broker.

Important Considerations:

  • Port of Entry:Ensure the port of entry listed on the CDC Dog Import Form receipt is the actual port you'll be using.
  • High-risk country restrictions:If your dog has been in a country considered high-risk for rabies in the past 6 months and you're entering at a land border, additional restrictions may apply. Mexico is not considered a high risk country at this time.
  • Quarantine:If your dog doesn't meet all the requirements, it may be subject to quarantine.

CANADA

To bring a dog from Mexico to Canada in 2025, you'll need to ensure it meets specific health and import requirements.   Primarily, the dog needs a valid rabies vaccination certificate, and a veterinary health certificate issued within 72 hours of entry. You'll also need to declare the dog to Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) upon arrival.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

1. Pre-Arrival Requirements:

  • Rabies Vaccination:The dog must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
  • Veterinary Health Certificate:Obtain a certificate from a veterinarian (approved by the relevant authority in Mexico) stating the dog is in good health and free from communicable diseases. This certificate must be issued no more than 72 hours before entry.
  • Microchip:A microchip is generally required, and it's best to have it implanted before rabies vaccination.
  • Travel Planning:Arrange for the dog's transportation well in advance, especially if traveling by air.

2. At the Border:

  • CBSA Declaration: Declare the dog to the CBSA upon arrival at the designated port of entry.
  • Visual Inspection: CBSA officers will visually inspect the animal and review the documentation.
  • Potential CFIA Inspection: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) may conduct further inspection or examination by a veterinarian if necessary.

3. Post-Arrival:

  • CFIA Veterinarian Inspection:If the CBSA requires it, the dog may be inspected by a CFIA veterinarian at the port of entry.
  • Rabies Vaccination:If the dog doesn't have a valid rabies vaccination certificate upon entry, it may need to be vaccinated at the owner's expense.

Important Notes:

  • Commercial Dogs:Be aware that commercial dogs (those intended for resale, adoption, breeding, etc.) are subject to stricter import requirements and may be prohibited from entering Canada from certain high-risk countries.
  • High-Risk Countries:Canada has specific requirements for dogs entering from countries considered high-risk for rabies.
  • Documentation:Ensure you have all necessary documentation, including the rabies certificate, veterinary health certificate, and any other required permits or forms.
  • Contact CFIA:For the most up-to-date information and specific requirements, it's recommended to contact the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) directly.
  • Travel by Air:If traveling by air, ensure your dog is allowed on the specific airline and that you comply with their regulations.
