SayulitAnimals’ Spay + Neuter program is provided to any dog or cat brought to SayulitAnimals, whether it is a beloved "family pet" or a newly-noticed stray. Animals that have not fasted, or do have an appointment will not be admitted.

Why do we offer this program by Donation?

This program remains the crux of all of our work, as it is THE most effective and humane form of population control available, and also helps reduce the number of street animal medical emergencies by simply having less helpless cats and dogs wandering around town. With less homeless animals, the ecosystem balances, the streets and beaches are more sanitary, abusive methods of population control become unnecessary, and we create a safer and saner home for us all.

Part of the Spay + Neuter program is cat trapping. The only successful way to deal with the abundance of feral cats is to trap the cats, spay or neuter them, and then put them back where they came from. This ensures that new cats will not take over the area, and that the cats that do exist in the area cannot reproduce. SayulitAnimals will help the community by providing the cat traps themselves so residents to catch the cats. We do not provide this as a service.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPAY AND NEUTER VOLUNTEERS!

When SayulitAnimals’ Spay + Neuter clinics are in full swing, visiting Veterinarians (who also donate their time and skills), can often operate on more than 40 animals over a two-day period. Because post-operative monitoring and care is of the highest priority for SayulitAnimals, volunteers are pressed into action. We also have a great group of people who staff our info and merchandise kiosk in town, work on our Website, or contribute in some other way. So, in acknowledgement for all they do, we are pleased to introduce you to SayulitAnimals’ Volunteers:

Karen Razza, Barbara Kirkwood, Janis Black, Jules Sanderson,

Jennifer London, Jamie Williams, Tracy Guizzetti

A Special Thank you to our Vets!

We could not perform this Clinic without the dedication of our Veterinarians!

    Looking for a vet?

    Don't live in Sayulita?

Annually we do a 3 day campaign in neighbouring towns such as San Ignacio, Punta de Mita,

Higuera Blanca and many small towns that you’ve never heard of!  All of our sterilizations are

BY DONATION, or with a pay-as-you-can donation. Contact Us to find out when we will be in your area.

How do I prep my dog or cat BEFORE the operation?

There are a few things you can to do make the process as pain-free as possible, for both you and your pet.

    1. Call 329-100-6650 or drop by our office to set up your appointment.
    2. Make sure the dog or cat has NO FOOD and VERY LITTLE WATER, at least 8 hours prior to surgery.
    3. Bring the animal to the clinic between 9:00-10:00am. NOTE: If you bring the animal in after 10:30am, you will lose your appointment.
    4. Try to bring a collar and leash for dogs, a secure container with air holes for cats, and a blanket or towel for after the surgery.
    5. When you pick up the animal, don’t leave without one of our AFTER CARE information sheets!
    6. Finally, help us continue to offer this service to the community by making a donation on behalf of the animal.

How do I care for my animal AFTER the operation?

    Please follow these instructions:

    1. Put your pet in a safe, clean place in your house until it is fully-recovered from the anesthesia. Your pet will be tired after the operation and will need up to 48 hours to recover.
    2. Don’t let your pet lick the wound. Use a cone if necessary.
    3. Your pet mustn’t run, swim or bathe for a week after the operation.
    4. Check the wound daily. Some swelling or redness is normal, but pus is a sign of infection, and must be treated by a Veterinarian.
    5. Stitches don’t need to be removed, as they will dissolve as the wound heals.

    WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK-OUT FOR:

    • Not eating after 48 hours.
    • Lethargic, low energy, sadness after 48 hours.
    • Excessive swelling and redness in wound, or signs of pus.

NOTE: If you see any of these warning signs, please immediately contact your personal Vet or take your animal to the nearest Veterinarian. See vet info below!
